Low Carbs VS High Carbs for Bodybuilding…the debate continues….
No doubt you have read a number of articles debating the pros and cons of following a low carb diet for bodybuilding purposes. The debate continues between those that advocate a higher carb diet and those that generally follow whatâs considering a low carb diet. My belief tends to be slanted to the lower carb approach but what is considered low and what it considered high? More importantly how can we strike a happy medium so we can achieve the results we are striving for a leaner more athletic physique?
From my experience, I have determined those that tend to disagree with the low carb methodology are the ones that love eating them. Hence itâs human nature to justify what one does despite whether it is right or wrong! The carb lovers tend to read between the lines for published scientific studies. They look for the abstracts that mention its ok to eat carbs at night or following a low carb plan will slow your metabolism. We all do it, we try and justify our bad habits because itâs much easier than facing the facts.
The inherent flaw with this kind of mentality is the twisted thought that you can get actually get away with something and still get the results you desire. Now, I wish that concept worked but I can honestly sayâŠnot in this lifetime! The fact remains if you want to develop a great physique that looks lean and athletic you will have to control your carb intake. Note I said control, not eliminate!
What about ZERO Carbs?
I am not an advocate of the ZERO carb diet, not because your body canât handle it, more so because your mind canât. It will wear you down mentally and everything we do to achieve success in life whether it be business, personal or physical has to be sustainable. Basically you need a plan you can stick with to produce ongoing results. Consistency is an integral part of any success program. A diet plan that drives you crazy after 3-4 weeks is not going to be sustainable.
On the other side of the coin you donât want to become a victim of the âkidding yourself clubâ where you actually believe you need more than 200-250gms of carbs per day. In fact for females the amount you need is much less. Any carbs you ingest that are over and above what you need will end up stored as fat or at a minimum make your body hold more water. So why consume more than you need? Because most people love eating carbs, thatâs why! Logically if we all just went out just did something because we loved it we would probably end up in a lot of trouble. The same applies to carbs. It has to be a love hate relationship where you know when to stop.
