Interview With Brad Cassidy

Brad Cassidy The Fitness Motivator

Interview with  Steve Jones Editor-in-chief

First off thanks for taking the time to share your journey into the world fitness with your most recent success being a 1st place at the 2015 Asia Pacific International in the Fitness Model
Category. We also are going to talk about the success you are achieving outside the gym and how your advice can possibly assist others in reaching their goals across all avenues of life. To begin with were you involved or are you still involved in any other sporting activities other than working out in the gym?
I grew up practicing all types of martial arts – Starting with karate then onto many others – Boxing, Wing Chun, Tai Chi, Muay Thai, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. I also had my first yoga class around 10 years ago, which was great!

Achieving success in life across all avenues is something that we all aspire to achieve both physically, emotionally and financially. Can you share your thoughts on this and a little insight to the mantra you follow to achieve goals across multiple platforms?
I truly believe the principles to succeeding in any area of life to be the same – Succeeding in business is no different to creating the physique you want. My mantra is to be very clear about your outcome (what do you want, specifically), and then more importantly… Why do you want it? What will it give you by achieving your result? Why is this important to you? How will it change your life? – Purpose has power and it gives us the momentum and strength to follow through. This is fundamental of what I believe we need to succeed – We must remain focused on a clear outcome and emotionally connect to the reason/purpose of achieving it.

I understand you share your success with thousands of people across Australia through motivational seminars. Can you tell us a little bit more about what you actually do?
I share my story to inspire others to take control of their lives. I share my big mistakes I’ve made and how I turned it around. I coach and train students on creating a lifestyle of their choice
using real estate investing / developing as the vehicle. I also coach and train people on peak performance – I start with building the foundations first (its like a inside/out, bottom/top approach). What I have found is that most people want the quick fix, show me the skill or show me what do I need to “DO” etc. Unfortunately this is not sustainable nor effective long term, as it’s the development of character, values, principles, vision, mission, ethics etc. that are required – i.e. Who do I need to “BE” first.

Everyone aspires to be successful in anything they do, but many fall short of the mark. What do you feel are the faults to why most fall short of their goals both physically and financially?
Something I say to my students often is: – “Knowledge is NOT power, knowledge is potential power. Effective execution of knowledge is power” Yes I preach this to my students but I also live by this day in/day out – I believe that unless you apply knowledge, results cannot be realised. Learning how to apply knowledge effectively is a great skill to have and one I am constantly working on and improving. The same goes for our talents and abilities… None of these are worth anything unless they are applied and utilised. There is a big difference between knowing what to do and doing what you know, this is what I have found to be the difference between students getting the results they’re after or not. Consistent focus and consistent action is the key – now, we may need to adjust our course/actions at times if things are going they way we thought and that’s ok, you will get there if you keep focused on your outcome and just keep taking that next step.

Passion is a word use quite frivolously these days. What does this word mean to you and how can we harness that power to empower our lives?
For me, Passion = Vision x Purpose. In other words, doing what you love and loving what you do. How do I harness it? Firstly, by creating a clear and compelling vision – I truly believe this is a very important part of achieving something, but its even more important and powerful to attach meaning (purpose) to the vision (Vision x Purpose). I have a daily routine where I connect with my vision and make sure I really get in touch with the reasons why I’m heading towards my vision and feel the emotions – Passion keeps me going through it all – The struggles, the setbacks and the successes.

Motivation is yet another word used often these days. What motivates you to jump out of bed in the morning with zest and enthusiasm for all that you do?
I have collected a significant amount of resources (books, audios, DVD’s etc.) over the last 12 years on many of the greats that have come before us. There is not a day that goes by that I don’t have at least 30mins of plugging into the vast wisdom, insight’s, lessons and learning’s from all areas of life. Its an amazing and humbling experience for me either reading, or watching, or listening to men and women who have dedicated decades of their lives to conveniently package it up for us to learn and leverage from. Some of my ‘mentors’ weren’t even alive when I was born, yet their message still remains as alive today as it was back when they captured it all those years ago (some back as far as the 1800’s). This is what motivates me and keeps me going – Create your own support network and peer group, they don’t even need to be alive.

Balance is vital in life, and in an industry where we see many spend countless hours in the gym pursuing physical goals while other aspects of their life end up suffering. How do you feel about this and how do you ensure you have an equal balance across all aspects of life?
This is not an easy one – I believe there is no such thing as a perfect balance in life; there is always something that needs attention or effort. For me, it is a constant and never ending pursuit of excellence – Meaning, that there needs to be a personal commitment made and a conscious decision to commit to continuous improvement in all areas of life.

I have created a life plan that has what I call Key Focus Area’s (KFA’s) in it. At this point in time, I have 6 KFA’s in my personal area of life and 3 KFA’s in my professional area. I set goals and outcomes to achieve in each area that are in line with my Ultimate Life Vision and Ultimate Life Purpose. As we all know, life happens and emergencies and unexpected events occur which throws out our best laid plans and therefore balance. So because of this, I practice a principle which I used and taught inside large corporations for managing improvements and plans, which is a concept called PDCA, this stands for Plan, Do, Check and Act. Without going on forever about this (which I could because I love it) it’s a process to make sure that you are continually monitoring and adjusting according to the results you are getting. To me balance is not a stagnant state, its dynamic and takes a continuous improvement mindset in all areas in life – i.e. not being excellent (stagnate/still), but practicing excellence (continually improving / never ending).
